HOW IT ALL STARTED
Monte began his racing career when he came to Charles Town, West Virginia in 1963 to work with his uncle, Frank Smith. Frank had a large racing stable and over the next seven years Monte learned the trade from the ground up. Frank operated his stable on a large scale-frequently going to major sales in an effort to upgrade his stock by acquiring well bred young horses. While working with his uncle's outfit Monte became adept at a range of duties - from grooming to exercising, and eventually assistant training.
It was during these years that Monte developed his own special day-to-day training schedule. This time-tested formula was later applied to his 15 horse stable ranging from his best allowance winners to the older and/or cheaper claimers. The success of his system stands to this day as records indicate his horses run consistently on the board.
In 1976, William Endebrock hired Monte to work exclusively for him on his farm near Yorktown, Virginia. Monte spent three years there and returned to the Charles Town circuit bringing some of Endebrock's horses with him. The impact he made was impressive- he won the first four races in which his horses started!
